The Council has an extensive property portfolio spread across Dumfries and Galloway; this includes schools, offices, town halls, sports and leisure premises, economic development units, social work premises, community halls, depots, libraries, galleries and museums.

The Council is seeking to recruit to a full-time post, based in Stranraer or Newton Stewart, and requiring daily travel across an assigned area covering the west of the region, from Gatehouse of Fleet to Portpatrick. The successful applicant will ensure the continued operation, safety, legislative compliance and effective maintenance of all Council properties within this assigned, geographical area and will also inspect the quality of repairs, maintenance and construction works at Council premises.

The successful applicant must have a recognised qualification in the building construction field, in a relevant building trade. You must have a sound knowledge of building and construction works, processes, trades and techniques; you must also have a sound knowledge of legislation and regulations governing building and property and of health & safety regulations relating to buildings and to construction work.

It is essential that you have significant experience in construction, previous experience of building and property maintenance, and previous experience as a foreman or chargehand on construction projects.

Ideally, you will also have previous experience as a Clerk of Works on larger scale building projects, and be a member of the Institute of Clerk of Works and Construction Inspectorate, although these are not essential requirements.

You must be: a good communicator; able to deal sympathetically with clients, building users and local managers; able to be firm and fair with contractors; and, able to interpret drawings, specifications and bills of quantities.

Essential personality factors include: being able to work under pressure; methodical working; proactive in approach; and being pleasant and helpful.

A current driving licence is an essential requirement of this post. However, if you have a disability which precludes you from holding a driving licence consideration will be given if alternative transport can be arranged, and you must be flexible to meet changes and varying workloads, and able to work beyond normal hours when required.
