The College currently has a vacancy for a Team Leader to have responsibility for the quality of academic provision within the maritime team. The post will involve having team leader responsibilities for the maritime courses which are over 6 weeks in length, including advanced, non-advanced and blended learning. The post will also involve teaching the full range of nautical provision, up to and including HND Nautical Science.  Internally, the successful candidate will manage the quality of materials and lead internal verification to ensure compliance with regulators. Externally, you will be the point of contact for nautical organisations & regulators regarding approvals and other academic matters.

The successful candidate will hold a current MCA Certificate of Competency at Master Mariner/Chief Mate Unlimited Level and will have sailed, as a minimum, as Chief Mate Unlimited on a range of vessels in international waters.  Additionally, the successful candidate will hold current short-course certification (GMDSS, ECDIS, NAEST, HELM) and will have experience of MCA regulation, audit, certification and approval systems.

It is also essential to have an excellent understanding of nautical organisations and regulators such as IMO, MCA, MNTB, and IAMI.  In addition, you must have teaching and assessing experience, as well as the ability to clearly express and explain concepts orally and in writing.

1. MCA Certificate of Competency at Master Mariner/Chief Mate (Unlimited) level
2. Current short-course certification (GMDSS, ECDIS, NAEST, HELM)
3. *Range of optional short-courses (BRM)
4. *TQFE/Teaching qualification or equivalent

1. You must have served at a minimum as Chief Mate Unlimited on a range of vessel types
2. Experience of sailing on a range of merchant navy vessels (must have experience of sailing on a minimum of two vessel types)  in international waters
3. * Experience of sailing as Master
4. Experience of MCA regulation, audit, certification and approval systems
5. * Experience of SQA processes
6. Experience of teaching or training or coaching people
7. Experience of assessing competence
8. Experience of maritime simulators
9. * Experience of sailing on 3 or more types of merchant navy vessels, in international waters (often known as “foreign-going”)
10. * Experience of managing discipline
11. * Experience of regulation, audit, certification and approval of short-course systems for AMERC; RYA, etc.
12. *Experience and knowledge of risk assessment procedures


1. Thorough knowledge and understanding of the nautical science subject area
2. Ability to clearly express and explain concepts across a wide range of nautical subject areas, both orally and in writing
3. Ability to explain nautical science concepts to students at all levels up to and including Chief Mate
4. Ability to develop course materials tailored to the needs of students and clients at different levels
5. Ability to proof-read documents to a high standard, including an excellent knowledge of English-language grammar
6. Ability to check students’ understanding
7. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of STCW 95/STCW 2010 pathways to certification
8. Demonstrate understanding of nautical organisations and regulators eg IMO; MCA; MNTB; IAMI etc

9. Demonstrate strong knowledge of Health & Safety in this vocational area
10. Ability to internally audit and manage external auditors
11. Excellent negotiation skills
12. Demonstrate strong IT skills, especially Microsoft Office, internet and e-mail
