Job Summary

Our Technical Services Officers support teaching in undergraduate laboratories, as well as expanding research activities. As such you will need to have an interest in working with students as well as researchers within the School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences.


You will assist academic staff in the delivery of laboratory based coursework; operate, maintain and demonstrate equipment; assist in the development of experimental modules; and assist in the preparation of equipment and materials for laboratory coursework.


We expect you to have good laboratory skills and have some experience of a wide range of techniques in the field of microbiology, molecular/cellular biology, biochemistry and/or isolated organ baths as well as preparation of reagents within a COSHH regulated environment. Enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, good organisational skills and computer literacy are essential.

Salary on first appointment is normally to the bottom of the scale, although in exceptional circumstances an appointment further up the scale may be considered.

Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of School


RESPONSIBLE FOR: N/A


PURPOSE OF THE POST: To provide technical support for the School's Laboratory Programmes in Biological Science.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

Assist academic staff in the delivery of laboratory based coursework.

Demonstration of equipment, skills and techniques, in respect of coursework, research and project work.

Assist in the development of experimental modules for research, coursework sessions and student projects.

Preparation of equipment and materials for laboratory coursework.

To operate and maintain laboratory equipment.

Maintain, order and receive, stocks of consumables in respect of the laboratory requirements.

Assist in ensuring safe working practices at all times within laboratories.

Ensure that all relevant health and safety documentation is maintained.

To carry out other duties as required by the Head of School.



Person Specification

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Professional Memberships

Minimum of HNC/HND level or equivalent


Knowledge and Experience

Knowledge of working in Biology-related area.

Experience of working in a laboratory.


DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Professional Memberships

Educated to degree level in a relevant area.


Knowledge and Experience

Knowledge of working in a microbiology laboratory.

Experience in working in higher education.
