Role Profile

Open to NAC Streetscene employees only


To supervise a squad in the provision of all duties involved with the burial & memorial process, and giving direction to members of the public, funeral directors and stone masons.


Corporate Responsibilities

  • To undertake individual role in line with the Council's Strategic Priorities and in compliance with the Council's corporate policies and procedures.
  • To undertake any other reasonably required duties as instructed by Management or someone acting on their behalf, in addition to the role specific tasks & responsibilities detailed below.

Role Specific Tasks & Responsibilities

  • To ensure that the burial service provided at the cemetery is provided in a safe manner by ensuring corporate H&S policy & processes and NAC procedures are followed.
  • To supervise and be responsible for allocated work squads.
  • Monitor cemetery grounds assets ensuring any faults are reported in a timely manner.
  • On a daily basis ensure adherence to the code of conduct for employees when communicating with the public, undertakers and fellow employees and any other stakeholders whilst ensuring an effective liason with line manager.
  • Ensuring adherence to Bereavement Service procedures when locating , preparing , and digging of graves together with the completion of all associated documentation and registers.
  • Assisting Funeral Directors in coordinating and conducting interments.
  • The use of associated vehicles, plant and machinery ; incorporating the pre-use inspection, routine maintenance, and cleaning of any allocated equipment and the reporting of any plant break downs .
  • Ensuring work programs are carried out in the proper manner, at the proper time and according to given instructions while in compliance with the Council's procedures and any relevant legislation.
  • Carry out pre burial memorial inspections.
  • Issue permits to stonemasons and supervise memorial works carried out.
  • Supervise / carry out the re-erection of headstones and installation of of foundations in accordance with BRAMM / NAMM
  • Carry out repairs to sunken lairs.







Education and Qualifications

  • Driving licence covering Categories  B , C1 , & E
  • Qualified in the use of mini excavators
  • C.O.T.S Cemetery Operatives Training Scheme
  • Memorial Management training.
  • ILM Award in first line
  • BRAMM Fixers Licence

  • Knowledge of the procedures involved in the opening and closing of new & existing burial lairs.
  • The use of machinery and plant associated with Grave Digging
