Role Profile


To undertake all duties involved with the burial process, including the preparation and maintenance of burial sites and their surrounds.  


Corporate Responsibilities

  • To undertake individual role in line with the Council's Strategic Priorities and in compliance with the Council's corporate policies and procedures.
  • To undertake any other reasonably required duties as instructed by Management or someone acting on their behalf, in addition to the role specific tasks & responsibilities detailed below.


Role Specific Tasks & Responsibilities

  • The location, preparation and digging of both new and existing graves, including any necessary shoring and shuttering.
  • Maintenance of graveside memorials, including assisting in the reinstatement of memorials.
  • Attending at interments.
  • Grounds maintenance, including grass cutting, hedge trimming, planting, pruning, seeding, clearing leaves and litter.
  • The use of associated plant and machinery, incorporating the pre-use inspection, routine maintenance and cleaning of any allocated equipment.
  • Dealing with the public, funeral directors and other stakeholders, while providing an effective liaison with other officers.
  • Assisting in the recording of lair locations, excavations and internments.







Education and Qualifications


  • SVQ Level 1 in Horticulture, or equivalent
  • Qualified in the use of mini excavators

  • Knowledge of the procedures involved in the opening and closing of new and existing burial lairs
