Oaklands School provides education for children and young people with complex, long term additional support needs where learners require a significantly modified learning environment.  Needs of learners are primarily associated with a learning disability and significant visual / sensory, health and medical needs.

The school serves a wide area with pupils attending from throughout the city of Edinburgh. It is a purpose built building on one level which caters for children and young people from 3 - 18 years.

Facilities include a hydrotherapy pool, soft play room and multi-sensory room as well as dedicated art, music, drama and home economics. There are medical and dental treatment rooms.  A dentist and dental hygienist regularly visit the school.

Keycomm, a citywide resource exists to help people with communication impairments, make use of technology to contribute to and control their environment.  This resource is based at Oaklands and used extensively by our school as is a holiday play scheme which is offered to all of our school aged pupils.

The school has a “Bright Start” assessment nursery..  There are currently 5 classes in the primary and 2 in the secondary.  This year we are hosting a class from St Crispins School. Class sizes are small and well staffed with typically a teacher, nursery nurses and  pupil support assistants  in each class.  The school currently has a role of 55 pupils.

Physiotherapy, speech and language, occupational therapy as well as health and dental services are all based in Oaklands.  The therapists and education staff work closely together to secure the best outcomes for our pupils.  The school doctor, orthotist and consultant medical and visual paediatricians hold regular clinics in school.

We are a Rights Respecting School  and we were awarded RRS school Level Award 1 in February 2016.

We were reaccredited in November 2016 and maintained our status a Centre of Excellence for MOVE (Move Opportunities Via Education). There are 18 Centres of Excellence in Europe, 3 of these are in Scotland.

In May 2014, Oaklands was inspected by Education Scotland

The inspection found the following key strengths

  • Happy, motivated children who enjoy their learning
  • A highly effective partnership working between teachers, support staff and partner agencies to meet children's needs
  • The positive impact of the MOVE programme
  • The total communication environment on children and young people's confidence and independence
  • The approaches to meeting the complex needs of children and young people with a visual impairement
  • Leadership of the head teacher to ensure the best possible provision for children and young people

In Dec 15 an education authority team visited Oaklands to assess the extent to which the school has continued to develop the quality of its education including the areas identified for improvement.

The report found that Oaklands provides a very good standard of education for the children and young people and that it had made significant progress since its very positive inspection in May 2014.

We had a recent inspection of our Nursery (October 2016) and the Care Inspectorate assessed us on two areas:

Quality of care and support 6 - Excellent

Quality of environment 5 - Very Good
