In Scotland, Jacobs leads the road design consultancy market for central government (Transport Scotland), which is worth approximately £45m per year. Jacobs' role includes the monitoring of road construction sites. Issues have arisen on some recent sites concerning the quality of surface water run-off, defining the measures a contractor is expected to put in place to address this issue and how this can be best specified to ensure compliance with the contract. The ability to clearly specify bespoke best practice measures in the contract documentation for a project will enable Jacobs to address these issues.
The role holder will identify new approaches to managing water on road construction sites. With climate change impacts on weather patterns and increasingly extreme rainfall events, sustainable approaches to water and flood mitigation are needed and this is the focus of this role. Limited monitoring data exists on the capacity, operation and maintenance of drainage systems and this is necessary to model system performance. Gathering and modelling this data on a number of key sites will also form a part of the KTP Associate role. The project will address regulatory challenges posed by SEPA on ongoing highways projects where the control of sediment run-off has become a major focus.
The essential requirements for this role are:
• A 2.1 Honours, Masters degree or higher in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or an associated discipline.
• Experience demonstrated through previous research, work experience or coursework of:
- Working within a multi-disciplinary team and engaging with stakeholders.
- Experimental (laboratory and in-situ) design.
- Geo-environmental monitoring and data collection.
- Working experience in numerical modelling.
• Excellent critical thinking skills, including knowledge of and the ability to apply environmental scientific methodology into a practical engineering environment.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to write for publication and present research findings to technical and non-specialised audiences.
• Strong numerical and analytical skills.
• Ability to engage with different stakeholders including the general public.
• Driving licence and ability to travel.

Main purpose of the role
The main purpose of the role is to develop innovative and sustainable approaches and processes for protecting the water environment during major highway construction.
Accountabilities/Responsibilities of the role
The Associate will work within the Jacobs Road Design Team in Glasgow and will report to the Company Supervisor. Academic lead and supervision will be provided by GCU.
The main responsibilities of the Associate will be to:
- Undertake a critical best practice review of drainage design during construction for highways schemes.
- Develop specification for the parameters within which innovative sustainable drainage systems are expected to function.
- Data collection from selected project site(s). In order to establish this baseline and monitor the performance of the drainage system against it during construction.
- Develop technical specification for determination and collection of critical soil, vegetation, and water-related drainage design parameters.
- Develop an innovative model for operation of temporary drainage during road construction.
- Calibrate and verify the model using monitoring data.
- Develop specification of landtake requirements for different treatments and at different project stages.
- Determine life cycle costs for different drainage solutions.
- Develop framework for assessment, design, and management of site drainage at different project stages.
- Apply the framework on a representative site and develop a practical guide on the appropriate temporary drainage risk mitigation methods for the representative site.
Educational and/or Professional Qualifications
E1 - A 2.1 Honours, Masters degree or higher in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or an associated discipline.
D1- Student member of (or evidence of working towards membership of) a relevant professional organisation (e.g. ICE, CIWEM)
