Job Summary

An outstanding lecturer who can also contribute to our profile, your experience will demonstrate the necessary commitment and enthusiasm to contribute to our teaching and research. You will teach both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, develop course materials for online and face to face learning, work flexibly and collaborate effectively with other members of the School. Strong programming skills are required. Your responsibilities will also include actively engaging in high quality research and income generation as well as contributing to the School's research and commercial activities.


You will need an honors degree and Masters degree in computer science or a related subject, as well as a PhD in this subject area. You will ideally have advanced knowledge of Computer Science, Cyber security, Ethical Hacking and Big Data Security. Accompanied by relevant professional and academic experience, you will have strong programming skills. In addition to this you will ideally have teaching experience at higher education level in Computer Science with evidence of successful student learning outcomes.


The School has internationally recognised research pushing the boundaries of theoretical and practical knowledge in Computing and offering novel thinking on how technology can enrich society and enable business to perform at a higher level. The School's research focuses on tackling challenges related to Big Data and Internet of Things. The main research themes include:

- Machine Learning and Optimisation
- Information Retrieval
- Artificial Intelligence
- Data Visualisation
- Usability


Researchers from the School actively pursue project opportunities and collaborations related to the strategic priority themes for the university of Oil and Gas, Smart Data, Remote Healthcare and Northern Culture and Design.


The Smart Data Technologies Centre (SDTC) is co-located with the School. The SDTC centre focuses on big data analytics, particularly for the oil and gas sector and aims to secure efficiencies from the use of analytics. We work closely with the DataLab - a Scottish innovation centre, which aims to generate significant economic, social and scientific value from big data. Robert Gordon University hosts one of the DataLab hubs, focusing on Oil and Gas. The School is also a member of the world-leading Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (SICSA).

Salary on appointment will be dependent upon experience. Candidates with limited/no lecturing experience will be placed on the first point of the scale, although consideration will be given to a market supplement (reviewed bi-annually) for those with specific industry experience.

Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of School


RESPONSIBLE FOR: No supervisory responsibilities


PURPOSE OF POST: The successful applicant will be expected to teach both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, develop course materials for online and face to face learning, work flexibly and collaborate effectively with other members of the School. Strong programming skills are required. The successful applicant will also be expected to actively engage in high quality research and income generation.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES:


  • Carries out designated teaching (e.g. via lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, laboratory work, field trips, studio work, practicals etc) and assessment duties in areas of expertise, or as otherwise required by the Head of School.
  • Actively engage in high quality research and income generation including
    - disseminating research outputs using a range of media. For example: academic publications, external reports, conference presentations, short courses for knowledge transfer, exhibitions, performances
    - working on externally-funded projects or contracts
    - assisting with bid-writing or tendering for external funding
    - developing external networks nationally and/or internationally
    - supervising research students
  • Participates in the development and preparation of teaching materials.
  • Provides tutorial personal guidance for students.
  • Supervises undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
  • Develops and maintains expertise in subject areas.
  • Participates in subject and course development.
  • Participates in curriculum development and, in particular, contributes to the introduction of new methods of teaching and learning.
  • Undertakes Course Leadership responsibilities, if required, and carries out all duties associated with the management of the course.
  • Undertakes appropriate administrative responsibilities (e.g. year tutor, student selection, examination organisation, placement organisation, timetabling, maintaining attendance records etc.).
  • Promotes and markets the School and its courses to local, national and international clientele (including student recruitment).
  • Maintains working relationships with other Schools/Departments/Units within the University, as necessary, for the smooth operation and continued development of the School and its courses.
  • Actively participates in and suggests relevant staff development activities.
  • Actively purses and/or encourages scholarly activities (e.g. writing for publication, developing own knowledge, promote interaction with industry and commerce by establishing externally funded commercial projects, presenting at conferences etc.).
  • Engages with other staff, wherever possible, in consultancy activities relevant to the School.
  • Establishes and maintains relevant professional and industrial links, as necessary, for the effective operation of the School's course (e.g. engagement in work of external bodies, educational and professional).
  • Represents the School on relevant University committees and the School and University on external committees.
  • Carries out such other related duties as may be required.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS


Qualifications and Professional Memberships

  • First Degree - 2:1 Honours degree or above and Master Degree in Computer Science or related subject.
  • PhD in Computer Science or related subject.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Solid knowledge in one or more areas at advanced level related to Graphics Programming and Animation, Audio & Visual Production or Cyber security, Ethical Hacking, Big Data Security
  • Practical knowledge in Computer Science
  • Strong Programming skills
  • Relevant professional/academic experience.
  • Some teaching experience at higher education level in Computer Science with evidence of successful student learning outcomes
  • Experience of high quality research and/or commercial work in Computer Science.
