Lecturer in Law (Maternity Cover)

Building on its success, the Law School is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic fixed term, Lecturer in Law. The successful candidate will contribute to a thriving Law School primarily through lecturing at undergraduate and graduate levels. Applications are welcome from those with experience of teaching any area of Law but in particular from those with experience of teaching in EU or Legal skills.
In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to undertake research in Law and carry out appropriate administrative roles within the Law School.
Individual staff in the Law School undertake high quality research over a number of specialisms, such as legal theory, construction law, corporate responsibility, medical law, and delict/tort. There are particular strengths in the following areas in which several Law School staff members are active:
• Commercial law;
• Criminal law;
• Dispute resolution;
• Employment and equality law
• Human rights;
• Intellectual property;
• Oil and gas/ energy law;
• Public law (including EU law);
• Scots private law; and
• Tax law
The School has close links with the University's Oil and Gas Institute but interdisciplinary work is carried out with other areas of the University as well as through collaborations with academic institutions. You will be expected to contribute to research output in the form of original research publications in quality journals, and supervision of doctoral students in your area of expertise. There is an expectation that, in collaboration with others, staff will seek out and obtain external research funding.
Salary on appointment will be dependent upon experience. Candidates with limited/no lecturing experience will be placed on the first point of the scale, although consideration will be given to a market supplement (reviewed bi-annually) for those with specific industry experience.

PURPOSE OF THE POST:
The Law School wishes to enhance its delivery of its courses, in particular the generic LLM, and Oil and Gas Law LLM both at postgraduate level, and the LLB programme. The Lecturer in Law will contribute to the delivery and development of the Law School's portfolio of courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
This position will actively underpin and support the teaching and consultancy activities of the Law School, as well as adding to the research profile of the department in that area.
Carries out designated teaching (eg via lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, laboratory work, field trips, studio work, practicals etc) and assessment duties in areas of expertise, or as otherwise required by the Head of Department.
Participates in the development and preparation of teaching materials.
Provides tutorial and personal guidance for students.
Supervises undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
Develops and maintains expertise in subject areas.
Participates in subject and course development.
Participates in curriculum development and, in particular, contributes to the introduction of new methods of teaching and learning.
Undertakes Course Leadership responsibilities, if required and carries out all duties associated with the management of the course.
Undertakes appropriate administrative responsibilities (eg year tutor, student selection, examination organisation, placement organisation, timetabling, maintaining attendance records etc).
Assists in the supervision and visiting of students during their periods of work experience.
Promotes and markets the School and its courses to local, national and international clientele (including student recruitment).
Maintains working relationships with other Schools/Departments/Units within the University, as necessary, for the smooth operation and continued development of the School and its courses.
Actively participates in and suggests relevant staff development activities.
Actively pursues and/or encourages research activities (eg writing for publication, developing own research, supervising research students, establishing externally funded research projects, presenting at conferences etc).
Engages with other staff, wherever possible, in consultancy activities relevant to the School.
Establishes and maintains relevant professional and industrial links, as necessary, for the effective operation of the School's course (eg engagement in work of external bodies, educational and professional).
Represents the School on relevant University committees and the School and University on external committees.
Carries out such other related duties as may be required.
Qualifications and Professional Memberships
First Degree in Law;
Masters in a relevant area, or equivalent
Membership of a relevant academic or commercial professional body
Knowledge and Experience
Demonstrated specialist knowledge of one or more of the required legal specialisms.
Academic teaching and research, or practitioner role in one or more of the required specialisms

Qualifications and Professional Memberships
PhD in a relevant area;
LLB in Scots Law;
Certificate in Higher Education Learning and Teaching
Knowledge and Experience
Awareness of the higher education environment, in the UK and internationally
Online teaching and learning environment; legal research
Willingness to conduct classes occasionally in evenings or weekends
Willingness to travel for university purposes. The successful candidates will be required to live with 30 miles of the University.
