This is an exciting opportunity to help develop the upcoming lottery funded Kirkcudbright Galleries, and assist in the management of Arts and Museums Services in the Stewartry, Dumfries and Galloway.

These new posts will be based in the Artists’ Town of Kirkcudbright as part of the Arts and Museums West team under the supervision of the Museums Curator, West. You will assist the team in the planning, organisation, preservation and public access to the Service’s collections. The primary purpose of both posts is to develop and deliver an exciting exhibition and events programme in the Kirkcudbright Galleries, a new site opening in 2017/18, and maintain the Kirkcudbright Artists’ Collection, a recognised historic collection of works. Both posts are hugely varied and we are looking for enthusiastic and forward thinking staff to join our small dedicated team.

Duties for both posts will involve a range of responsibilities with a focus on the development of public access to the Kirkcudbright Artists’ collections including the planning, production and delivery of permanent and temporary exhibitions and events; supervision of front of house staff and the management of the building, equipment and budgets; marketing at both local and national levels; community engagement including volunteer programmes and schools events; collections management including organisation and documentation of collections; conservation and security of the site and collections; income generation and assistance with strategic and regional projects.

While both posts will work as a team in all aspects of the development of the Kirkcudbright Galleries, and will be assisted by the D&G Museums Service team, each post will take leading roles in specific areas.

The permanent post will lead on resource, budget and site management, income generation and marketing and the development of an exciting and engaging temporary exhibitions programme suitable for a gallery national importance. Particular skills in budget and staff management and an understanding of historic art and art handling, transportation, loan agreements and large scale exhibition planning and display would be an advantage.

The temporary post will lead on community engagement through public talks and consultations, volunteer recruitment and training, an education programme from pre-school to postgraduate level and a range of events and activities aimed at embedding Kirkcudbright Galleries within the community, and skills and experience in this area of work would be an advantage.

Applicants to both posts must be educated to degree level or equivalent and a qualification in the management of arts and museum collections is desirable. Demonstrable experience of managing arts and museum collections, buildings and other resources, exhibition programming, conservation, security, health and safety and knowledge of an area of the art collections are essential. For both posts, skills in working with a variety of community groups and experience in the development and management of imaginative events is highly desirable.

A current driving licence is an essential requirement of this post. However, if you have a disability which precludes you from holding a driving licence consideration will be given if alternative transport can be arranged

Some evening and weekend work will be required.

These posts are considered as Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. From 28 February 2011, preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG scheme update check prior to formal offer of employment being made by Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Applicants who have been resident outside the UK within the last 5 years, if offered a position, in addition to a Disclosure Scotland Check, will be required to provide a completed police record check from the police authority in the country or countries in which they were resident.

The posts are generously funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Holywood Trust.
