West Lothian Council is one of Scotland's most successful local authorities and is based in Livingston. Legal Services provides comprehensive legal and committee services to the council and is made up of four teams - Committee Services, Licensing, Litigation, and Property/Planning. This is a varied and challenging role as part of a small and busy team. the post-holder is expected to undertake all aspects of general contracts work including drafting, negotiating and reviewing agreements. In addition, where necessary, the post-holder will provide advice on procurement issues and will undertake project and construction related business. The post-holder will provide guidance in relation to the preparation of Freedom of Information responses, will prepare responses to internal review requests and will assist in preparing responses to appeals to the Scottish Information Commissioner. Advice in relation to Data Protection legislation and associated agreements will be provided when necessary. The post-holder will also be required to act as Clerk to the Regulatory and other Council Committees and undertake such other areas of work as required. The post is suitable for and will be of interest to an enthusiastic and motivated solicitor seeking a position which brings the unique challenges of being an in house legal adviser. The successful candidate will be client focussed and proactive in the identification of issues relevant to council services. In addition to the technical competencies required the successful candidate will have excellent communication and team working skills. They will deliver advice to team members, council officers and elected members in a clear and concise manner, demonstrate a commitment to excellence in customer service and a flexible approach to meeting changing demands and priorities. They will contribute to and participate in the Council's training programme for colleagues and client services. LLB Degree or Equivalent, Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, Membership of the Law Society of Scotland with a current unrestricted Practising Certificate and Post-qualifying general contracts and procurement experience is essential
